  1. The Lusitania tragedy was one of the reasons why the US entered the First World War – a major mistake by the Germans, though the historical debate’s been ongoing about that one. It’s intriguing in some ways; it was as big a human disaster as the Titanic, in so many senses, and yet – though we do remember it – it’s never quite had the same sense of historical importance. I suppose perspectives change against the backdrop of war.
