Reinventing The Dwindling Middle Class May Take A Revolution
As the U.S. recovers from the Great Recession, one fact that’s emerging is that while jobs are coming back, most of these jobs are either high- or low-paying jobs. Middle-class jobs are not coming back, and it’s evident in towns across the Midwest like Lincoln, Ill.
Remind me not to visit Lincoln any time soon. I haven’t seen this sort of decline in Lansing or Leavenworth. The tiny town I grew up in out in the county though is probably a poster child for the situation described in NPR’s article above. Sad and scary.
This Friday my employer is sponsoring a fundraiser jeans day in support of Hillcrest Transitional Housing of Kansas. I plan to participate by donating more than the requested minimum of five dollars ($5.00).
This charity provides rent free hosing on a short-term basis in the Wyandotte and Johnson County areas of the greater Kansas City metropolitan area. This housing is combined with financial education and provides a structured program design to assist homeless individuals and families in transitioning to self-sufficiency.

On the last day of August, my husband found an interesting recipe article via his Flipboard app on his smartphone. He handed me his phone and wanted me to write down the recipe. I rolled my eyes. Instead, I used the share feature of either the Flipboard or Firefox for Android app to e-mail a link to him (and me, since it would be preserved forever in my email sent items).
Since that time, I purchased an air popper to pop popcorn, with the express intention of trying out the aforementioned recipe. While I’ve popped popcorn several times with the air popper, I have yet to actually make caramel corn. So I can’t vouch for the veracity of the recipe, nor for its claim to lack of difficulty in execution.
All of this is neither here nor there. A couple of comments and reminders from my husband this past week, with him nudging me to e-mail this recipe to our daughter because she was interested in trying it, prompted me to go digging through my sent items to locate the lost and forgotten caramel corn recipe article link. Instead of forwarding the e-mail to my daughter, I thought I’d preserve the link here at my blog where I (and anyone else) can easily search for it in the future.
Now everyone can find it, not just me and my email out box.
I’m an early riser. I’m always up before the sun. Some mornings, like this morning, I wake up to obscured skies, clouds reflecting the ruddy golden light of Kansas City in the southeast from my bedroom window.
Probably closer to a 3.5 (mostly because I didn’t completely connect with the characters) but I’ll balance that with a 4.5 for excellent sword fight scenes and nearly non-stop action and intrigue. Reminded me of watching the series 24 sort of mashed up with the mini-series Pillars of the Earth through the lens of underworld organized crime and a dash of dark magic. Hard to put down and stayed up late to finish. Continue reading “Book Review: Among Thieves by Hulick (4 Stars)”
This type of urban fantasy could easily grow on me. Absolutely no zombies and only one token cameo vampire. I didn’t mind the pack of werewolves.
All the rest of the ‘paranormals’ hailed from Celtic mythology. Oberon the Irish wolfhound got the best lines, often at the expense of our hero, the Iron Druid.
I’m writing this “how to” article for those members of my family (who shall remain anonymous) that resist the urge to create an account for every website they happen to frequent. There is a way to follow my blog without creating a WordPress account.
I almost missed the sunrise this morning because I overdid it yesterday trying to contain my oak tree’s leaf largesse. I ran out of leaf bags (two left over from last year plus ten more purchased this week from Home Depot) and the rain (or is that reign?) of leaves continues.
I fell out of bed at about a quarter to six and this is what I saw out my bedroom window:
Not bad with just my smartphone camera on “Dawn” setting.
I’m taking the rest of the morning ‘off’ to recover from yesterday. Home remodeling projects will be calling my name this afternoon.
