So my dad calls me on my cell phone this morning, soon after I arrived at work. He called to wish me well on the last day of my 50th year.
How Sweet!
(Can you hear the sarcasm dripping from my lips?)
In other news, welcome to October!

I’m a Libra so this is naturally my favorite day of the year.
I feel so balanced today.
Have a great day!

St. Vincent (2014)
Watched BluRay (via Netflix) September 2015
Rating: 3.5 to 4 stars
Very brief synopsis (via IMDB): A young boy whose parents have just divorced finds an unlikely friend and mentor in the misanthropic, bawdy, hedonistic war veteran who lives next door.
This film surprised me. All the performances were above average. Granted, this wasn’t much of a stretch for Bill Murray, but he did have a few shining moments. Lots of good laughs along with some very touching tragedy. We were all smiling and crying by the time the credits rolled.
I can see why it did so well at last year’s film festivals. Give this one a try. You’ll probably like it.
A world for children: J. R. R. Tolkien, The Hobbit: or There and Back Again (London: Allen and Unwin, 1937) The publishers claim that The Hobbit, though very unlike Alice, resembles it in being the work of a professor at play. A more important truth is that both belong to a very small class of… Read More »

Three years ago today, Terry and I rescued Lexy from a shelter in Parsons, Kansas.
She’s ready for her closeup now:
She’s a little greyer on her muzzle, but she still bullies Porthos (who outweights her by almost 20 pounds) and keeps him in line.
We’re so happy she’s still with us and had a clean bill of health from the vet just last week.

Hmmm … Maybe my daughter’s move to the Puget Sound area wasn’t such a good deal after all … at least for the long term.

My wallpaper on my work computer displayed a photo I took several years ago of my great-grandfather’s grave in Easton, Kansas:
When I saw his date of death on the headstone, I realized that this summer was the 40th anniversary of his passing. So I went searching for his obituary, which a relative had posted on the Find A Grave web site. Continue reading “Remembering My Great Grandfather”
An excellent analysis of one of my favorite Disney classics, Sleeping Beauty, posted at Tor.com and authored by Mari Ness.
Some interesting tidbits:
I’m not nearly as excited about voting in the Hugos this year as I was last year. I’ll get much more excited next year when World Con actually comes to my home town (or close to it) in Kansas City.
